Presidency University Kolkata PhD Submission Guidelines
A registered candidate shall have to work for a minimum period of two years after registration. If the Supervisor certifies that the candidate has carried on research for two years and that the thesis embodies at least two years’ work, then the Doctorate Committee on recommendation of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) may permit a candidate to submit his/her thesis one year after the successful completion of coursework.
A student must have at least one research publication in a refereed journal, out of his/her doctoral research work, and produce presentation certificates for two paper presentations made at conferences/seminars prior to submission and shall produce evidence for the same in the form of acceptance letter or offprint to the Research Advisory Committee (RAC).
Ordinarily, six months prior to submission of thesis, the candidate shall, through the Supervisor/ Convener of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) six copies of the summary of work preferably within 5000 words. The same shall be circulated by the Convener to the members of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC). Committee at least fifteen days before holding a pre-submission Seminar. In the pre-submission Seminar, the candidate shall report the research work before the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) which shall also be open to all faculty members and other research scholars. Notice of the Seminar shall be circulated and the same may be put up on the Departmental Notice Board.

During the seminar any member of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) may put forward specific suggestions, if any, to the candidate and, if necessary, in writing. The candidate will be required to work upon the suggestions given by the Committee in consultation with the Supervisor(s). If required, the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) may ask the candidate to re-appear at the seminar. Immediately after the Seminar, the convener of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) shall forward to the concerned Doctoral Committee a report in the prescribed form, on the performance of the candidate.
At least two months prior to submission of the thesis, the Supervisor and the members of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) shall meet to prepare a panel of six experts for the written part of the thesis (at least three from outside the state) and a panel of three experts for the viva-voce and send it to the Doctoral Committee. The Research Cell shall forthwith send to the Registrar the recommended panels of experts to seek their consent for adjudication of the thesis and for the viva-voce, along with eight copies of the abstract of the thesis of the candidate, not exceeding 350 words (Submission in electronic format may also be allowed).
A registered candidate shall have to submit four hard copies (the number may be determined separately in case joint supervision) and one electronic copy of the thesis duly recommended by the supervisor(s) embodying the results of the research she/he has carried out together with four copies of the synopsis of the thesis. The copies of the thesis should be submitted to the Research Cell, addressed to Registrar, together with a receipt of the non-refundable fees (to be decided by the university from time to time) paid to this University for this purpose.
The candidate shall also deposit a fee, as decided by the University from time to time, along with a prescribed form duly filled in by the candidate, a certificate from the Supervisor, as well as attested copies of necessary documents at the time of submission of the thesis.
The candidate may also submit in support of the thesis the contents of any work which may have been done previously by him/her, but the candidate shall not submit any work for which a degree or distinction has been conferred on the candidate by this or by any other University. The candidate will not, however, be precluded from incorporating any such work in a thesis covering a wider field, provided a clear statement of the work so incorporated is given.

This section has been added here to provide guidelines on layout and format to the students for thesis writing. One of the essential requisites in preparation of the thesis is the consistency of the design and adherence to the specific instructions given in the following subsections.
Font & Font Size in Presidency University Kolkata Thesis
The thesis should be written in English. It must be typewritten on A4 size paper (21 cm x 29.7 cm) in a clear and legible font (e.g., Times New Roman 12). As far as possible, use the same font for the entire thesis, but, if necessary, different fonts may be used within Tables, Figures, and Appendices. The thesis has to be printed singlesided. Double-spacing should be used in the Abstract and text of the Thesis. Single spacing should be used in long Tables, block quotations separated from the text, footnotes, and bibliographical entries. Paragraphs should begin with one indent. indented, and there need not be an empty line between paragraphs.
A larger size type may be used for the Thesis title and Chapter headings, as long as it is no larger than 18 points. Boldface type may also be used on the title page and for headings, as well as in the text for special symbols or for emphasis. Reduced type may be used within Tables, figures, and Appendices, but it should be at least 9 points in size (partly because of microfilming requirements) and must be completely legible.
The Thesis should be free from grammatical, lexical, and punctuation errors. In addition to the computer spellchecker, a thesis should be proofread to check that errors do not remain that are not detected by the spellchecker. The Thesis should consistently use either American or British spelling but should not alternate between the two. When using numbers in the text, all numbers upto ten, and if the first word of a sentence is a number, they should be written in words. Writers not fluent in English are. encouraged to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English.

Presidency University Kolkata PhD Thesis Chapter and Page Layout
- Begin each chapter on a new page. Do the same with each element of the front matter (list of Tables, Acknowledgments, etc.), the. Reference section, and each Appendix. Avoid typing a heading near the bottom of a page unless there is room for at least two lines of text following the heading. The Chapters should begin on a new page, but sections and subsections should not. A "display" page (a page that shows only the Chapter title) can be placed at the beginning of Chapters or Appendices.

- Pages should be numbered at the bottom right, using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) beginning with ‘1’ on the first page of the Introduction and continuing consecutively to the end of the manuscript, including References. The preliminary pages are numbered in lower-case Roman numerals, beginning with the declaration page.

- A margin of at least 4.0 cm must be left at the top and left side of each page and a margin of at least 2.5 cm on the right and bottom. The last letter or character in the longest line on the page determines the margin.
Appropriate use of headings and subheadings in Presidency University Kolkata PhD Thesis
Headings should be distinguished from the surrounding text by larger font size, a different font, bolding, italics, or a combination of these. All headings of the same level should use the same style, and headings at lower levels should be less prominent than those at higher levels. Examples:

- Heading for the section: (Times New Roman 14 point - Bold Italic)
- Heading for sub-section: (Times New Roman 12 point – Bold)
