Netaji Subhas University Synopsis, Thesis Format & Guidelines

Netaji Subhas University has set some guidelines for the Thesis work and Seminar to maintain the standard and quality of work and also to combat the plagiarism issue in general. They are as follows –

  • The topics should be relevantly linked to the present advancement and important areas of the subject. 
  • It should be specific to a particular domain or may be cross-linked to the other domains of the subject, but a general broad based review should be avoided. 
  • A ‘Certificate of Original and Authentic Thesis Work’ must be submitted to the School of Sciences, Netaji Subhas University for each Thesis by the Supervisor and Coordinator jointly in the Letter-head of the Study Centre with the Abstract of the work minimum three weeks prior to the End-term Examination of the paper, failing which the candidate will be liable to be disqualified for the examination. 
  • No repetition of work will be accepted from any candidates or learners across the Study Centres and across the years. Though partial similarities may be accepted in case to case basis only if declared by the candidate and supervisor with proper reason separately apart from the ‘Certificate of Original and Authentic Thesis Work’. 
  • Some experimental work or survey can be included with the connection of the area if such data provide incremental or add-on knowledge to the field or help to analyse the topic to a certain extent. With the review such data will be appreciated when the authenticity of such work can be produced and judged properly by the University. 

The Thesis should consist of the mentioned sections –

  • Title Page (include Title of the topic, Candidate’s name, registration and roll no., Supervisor’s name with designation and name of Study Centre)
  • Introduction
  • Relevance of the topic (and/or Aims and objectives of the study)
  • Review of Literature (detailed knowledge on the topic should be discussed)
  • Analysis of the knowledge (and highlight Lacuna if any)
  • Conclusion (and future direction, if any)
  • References

The Thesis should be a minimum length of 250 pages except Title pages, References, Figure legends and Tables. Should be type-written in standard font, size 10-12, line spacing 1.5 and on one side of the paper. 

It should be written in English in candidate’s own version (not to be copied directly from any existing literature) and must be plagiarism checked with a maximum of 20% similarities except references or bibliography. Any figures, diagrams or photographs taken from any sources including web sources must be mentioned and acknowledged properly. 

Reference should be prepared either in the text with authors’ surnames and year only for 1-3 authors like – Ada and Gulliani, 1989, and for more than 3 authors like – Sedgwick et al., 2003 and cited properly. 

Netaji Subhas University will revise the terms and conditions and judgement procedures and marks as per the demand of the situation and revision of syllabus and curriculum structure. 

Appropriate use of headings and subheadings in Netaji Subhas University PhD Thesis

Headings should be distinguished from the surrounding text by larger font size, a different font, bolding, italics, or a combination of these. All headings of the same level should use the same style, and headings at lower levels should be less prominent than those at higher levels. Examples:

  • CHAPTER TITLE: (Times New Roman 16 Point -Bold Uppercase)
  • Heading for the section: (Times New Roman 14 point - Bold Italic)
  • Heading for sub-section: (Times New Roman 12 point – Bold)

All headings should be left-aligned, except chapter headings, which may be centered. The headings and subheadings should preferably be numbered, as required.

The manuscript consists of three main parts: Preliminaries, Text, and the Annexure. It is to be arranged in the following sequence:

  • Cover Page
  • Title Page
  • Declaration~ by the student
  • Certificate by the Research Guide
  • Approval of the Thesis
  • Acknowledgements
  • Table of Contents
  • List of figures, Tables, or Illustrations
  • List of Abbreviations (optional)
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Literature Review
  • Materials and Methods
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Summary and Conclusion
  • Bibliography/References
  • List of publications from Thesis
  • Appendices
